What in the world is a Leaky Gut? I had never heard this term until a year ago when our daughter was diagnosed with a Leaky Gut. Really? Is that possible? Well, we found out that it happens when the lining of your intestines become so thin and begin to actually have tiny fissures. When this happens, tiny particles of undigested food is allowed into the bloodstream. After learning more about this problem, we realized that our whole family probably has it and we just didn't know it. So, the only logical next step was to radically change our diet. 

After extensive research, I found that there are several foods that help to heal a Leaky Gut. Fermented foods are amazing at providing the probiotics needed to repair the intestinal wall. Meghan at Whole Natural Life has a great recipe for making your own Kefir. Kefir is one of those very important foods that should be eaten on a daily basis especially if you have Leaky Gut. It is so delicious!! You can even make it dairy-free using coconut milk. Here is a simple recipe to help you start your "fermenting adventure."

Detoxing the body is another step to jumpstart the healing process in the digestive tract. Infusing your drinking water with healing herbs is a refreshing step to easily rehydrate the body as well as heal it. Aloe is amazing for calming down inflamed digestion and cilantro is a close "runner-up." No one can go wrong using a little bit of ginger and/or peppermint in your drinking water. They are both wonderful for any form of stomach or intestinal issues. Anya at Prepare & Nourish has put together twelve different types of detoxifying infusions. It is so crucial for our bodies to detox before they begin the healing process. We have to get the "gunk" out of our bodies first and then our bodies won't be so stressed and inflamed. By keeping the immunity high, the susceptibility for disease runs extremely low.  The intestinal wall can repair itself when it doesn't have to fight external intruders. Never ever let your immunity drop since antibiotics are seriously detrimental to repairing the "gut lining." It seems that antibiotics are some of the biggest culprits for triggering a Leaky Gut. Another element of disease reversal is to eliminate all foods from the diet that would cause any form of an allergic reaction. It's crucial do continue doing this for about four months. This is kind of like "jump-starting" the body. The intestinal tract cannot heal itself if there is constant inflammation traveling within the digestive system. The body releases an immune response whenever we eat allergenic foods. The "trigger foods" can be different for each person. However, when the body doesn't appreciate a certain type of food - there is an immune response released which produces excessive amounts of inflammation causing sickness within the body. These five foods/herbs are just a few of the beginning steps to healing a Leaky Gut. Many people have this issue and sometimes don't even realize it. This is why our family tries to eat a bit healthier than we did several years ago. It was a real "eye-opener" when our daughter was diagnosed with Leaky Gut. It scared me at first - which pushed me into so much extensive research. It is possible to heal a Leaky Gut but it takes time with lots of healthy eating. Cheers to better health!!!

  1. Fermented vegetables are very good for leaky gut. I found lot of relief when I was on that diet. Also when it helped me when I had apple cidar vinegar (1 table spoon) in water, before I ate my food. It helped in my digestion and stomach felt good.

    Leaky gut is no easy problem to get control of - I have been trying to for years and still haven't been able to completely win the battle. I use mint that I grow myself in my water and drink mint tea to soothe my stomach and I use Aloe Vera too quite a bit. You have providea wealth of information here and some great recipes and ideas that are very healthful an helpful. l Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted!
