3 Amazing Benefits


Due to so many diseases becoming more and more prevalent in today's society, there is a growing demand to learn more about why it is so important to eat a healthier diet. Our guest writer, Shelly Stinson, discusses the three benefits of why it is so crucial to eat the healthiest foods possible.  

Have you noticed that a lot of diets nowadays are pushing us toward eating more natural foods? This is way different than in the past as most food programs used to say you could have whatever foods you wanted as long as they were within a certain number of calories or had a limited amount of fat grams. 

So why are these newer and supposedly better eating plans now telling us to choose foods that are as close to their natural state as often as possible? It’s likely because there are many benefits of eating natural foods, and here are just three of them:

1. Lower Disease Risk. Research is now linking high consumption of processed foods with increased risk of autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and celiac disease. That’s in addition to the other studies that have linked these food sources to major, life-threatening conditions such as cancer and heart disease. 

The reason behind this higher disease risk is suspected to be the additives in the foods that are lowering your body’s resistance to the toxins it’s supposed to be able to fight. Ultimately, this makes it easier for disease to set in.

2. Healthier Body Weight. If your goal is to achieve a healthier (a.k.a. lower) body weight, choosing natural foods over processed options is the best way to get there according to the health experts, like the ones at Harvard School of Public Health

Basically, by eating fish, poultry, nuts, beans, brown rice, barley, fruits, and vegetables, you’re giving your body the nutrients it needs without subjecting it to the man-made substances that are typically added to processed foods that tend to fuel your appetite and make you want to eat more (like sugar and salt).

3. Fewer Struggles with “Addictive Eating.” One University of Michigan study has found that eating foods that have been highly processed—pizza, fries, chocolate, etc.—increases your likelihood of “addictive eating.” They believe that it’s the substances in these types of foods that stimulate the reward center of your brain, making it harder to make healthier food choices. 

On the other hand, if you eat primarily natural foods, you won’t run into this issue, which makes following a nutritious diet easier because you’re not fighting against the chemicals in your brain to do it. It’s like, by eating natural foods, you’re working with your body instead of against it.

It’s because of benefits like these that you want to eat as many natural foods as you can, leaving processed foods as more of a treat than a regular part of your diet. While it may take a little more time to prepare these types of meals, the reality is that you’ll likely feel better and live longer when you change to this way of eating.

And if you’re not someone who enjoys spending a lot of time in the kitchen, you can always get your nutrients from natural foods by using just a little bit of creativity. For instance, you could juice your fruits and veggies, and even do so in larger batches so you have meals ready for you whenever you need them. Like when you're about to step out the door and forgot to eat breakfast, a healthy and homemade juice can be what you need.

Eating naturally should be enjoyable, so find ways to make it fit into your lifestyle and that’s what it will be. Once you do, the process of healthy eating becomes beneficial mentally and physically.
